This type of stone is pricier than other types of garnets but well worth the money as they look spectacular set as a single pendant or in a ring or set in pairs as earrings. The larger the stone is the more likely it is to show off its ability to change color to the best effect. Technically the minerals responsible for this glittering color shift are vanadium and chromium.
Color change garnets also look better in settings that are not backed, unless it is backed by a mirror as light is needed to refract through the stone so that the wearer can watch it change from hue to hue. For this reason it looks better in raised, claw like settings that allow the back of the stone to receive some light as well. As this color-changing stone is a garnet it is definitely hard enough to be supported in mounts that more showcase the stone. Color changing garnets general have a hardness level of 7.25, which makes them quite resistant to scratching or dulling abrasions.
These stones above one carat are rarer than most which is why if you find one you should showcase it in a unique and beautiful setting. The smaller stones make very glamorous dangling earrings and pendants that are very good at catching the romantic fire of candlelight.
Other stones that have the ability to change color like this are the chrysoberyl and sapphire. The most famous gemstone of this Alexandrite which is the most valuable of the color changing gemstones. By contrast however the color changing garnet is immensely more affordable both for customers and jewelry designers.
